The expanded SFI offer builds on from the SFI scheme which was launched in summer 2023. The application process will be similar to SFI23 process , with many more options available.

Members who are already signed up will have to consider what they do (continuing in their agreement until expiry, leaving early and transferring into a new scheme, or running multiple schemes alongside each other.

WHATS NEW?

  • Opens from July 2024
  • 23 newly introduced actions
  • 57 amended actions (previously sat within the Mid-Tier)
  • Most of the actions will be for a 3-year period (8 options will be for a 5-year period)
  • 10 actions will be capped at 25% of the eligible area
  • The species rich grassland options will require endorsement from Natural England

What do you need to know?

The RPA have been testing the updated SFI application system with volunteers. Those interested completed an expression of interest form and submitted this to the RPA. Testing of the new process ran until 22nd July, at which point applications will open to the wider sector.

Applications will stay open throughout the year, so you can choose when to apply. Agreements will normally start the month after your application is approved.

Whats the difference between the 2023 agreement and the expanded offer?

New entrants can apply. If you have not claimed BPS in the past, you can claim the SFI, this was not possible in the 2023 application (this is great news for starter farms).

A lot more choice, with 102 actions available for farmers and land managers who have management control of land.
